A long-vacant Laois convent with a Gothic church has come on the market for €550,000.

The long unused Convent and Church of the Presentation are prominent buildings on the main street of Electric Picnic town, Stradbally.

They are 8,000 square feet.

Both are for sale at a price of €550,000.

The auctioneer describes them as landmarks in the city.

“The site parallels Main Street and runs northeast towards the River Stradbally. The existing Old Convent of Presentation is a three-storey, twelve-bay terraced convent built around 1880 with full access to the pavement behind.

“The building extends to the rear and includes a two-storey five-bay return with gabled bell tower. The property includes several single-storey sheds and outbuildings to the rear.

“To the south-east, a gabled neo-Gothic Catholic chapel built around 1890 is also included in the property folio. The existing convent building is on the records of the Laois County Board of Protected Structures Reference RPS234. The chapel of the convent of presentation is also on the registers of Protected Works Reference RPS746 The two Works are registered in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage Chapel – 12900426 Convent – 12900427.

“The existing convent building has been unoccupied for many years. It is noted in Council records that there is a collective desire to return the structure to service and that a community facility could be included in any future proposal for the site. .

“A previous planning application (Ref: 02156) to convert the convent building into a hostel was deemed withdrawn on the basis of a request for additional information that was not met. There is no trace other planning applications associated with this site or the property.”
