KY woman finds old photo with scary faces on tombstone
A cemetery is one of my favorite places. I know that sounds weird and weird, but it’s true. There is a tranquility you won’t find anywhere else. I know, it looks super scary too. Let me explain.
Why do cemeteries relax?
For me, a cemetery closes everything else. It shuts down all the feelings, emotions and noises that I tend to absorb in crowded public places. I love being around people, but to find true peace and quiet, a cemetery is perfect. I particularly like to walk in a cemetery.
Someone on Quora.com explains the peaceful and relaxing feeling like this,
- You are not afraid of death – many people are afraid to go to the cemetery alone and they are also afraid to think about their own death which is inevitable;
- You are more introverted than extroverted – too many people and noise can wear you down. For you, the bigger world is inside.
- You love nature – this is in case the graveyards you feel peaceful are in nature and there are lots of grass, trees and other plants which also bring relaxation.

In cemeteries there are things around you that you cannot see, but you can smell them. It can be just a feeling, a quick shadow, a thrill, or a noise. Some things cannot be explained. If you are open to the paranormal, you will see things. If you’re not, you might not.
When you find things hard to explain
A member of my family posted a photo in our family Facebook group. It was a photo of a family gravestone that someone took in 1972. She found the photo among her mother’s belongings, my husband’s grandmother. The headstone marks the grave of her great-great-great-grandmother and it is located in a small hilltop family cemetery in Daviess County, KY. The whole cemetery is hidden in the woods and you have to walk to get there.
…a family cemetery is defined as a plot of land “which is not associated with a specific religious organization but which is the burial place of persons related by blood, marriage or household”. As the term suggests, it is usually owned and managed by a member of the same family.
Two faces on the tombstone
In the photo, she saw images of two faces on the front of the headstone. Faces that obviously weren’t part of the original headstone. It’s as if they’ve been burned into stone over time. When you see them in the photo, you see them, they jump on you and they are very scary. Both faces seem to have their mouths open and they seem to be screaming.
The tombstone is so old that it has fallen off and broken, also appearing to be upside down. This makes the tombstone even scarier. But, it IS a family gravestone, so it’s not scary at all, is it? It’s always a bit creepy. Upside down, broken, weird faces and all.
Could the photo have been altered?
Keep in mind that the photo was taken in 1972, when there was no photoshop or filtering apps of any kind. It’s really quite amazing. She showed the photo to many family members and friends and some people saw many faces in the photo.
I see two faces, do you?
