F1 winner Bottas surprised by ‘strange’ €50,000 success in ass photo
Alfa Romeo Formula 1 driver Botta remained in the United States after the Miami Grand Prix, taking time to travel with his partner and professional cyclist, Tiffany Cromwell.
Botta posted a photo on his Instagram showing him swimming in a stream in Aspen, Colorado with his bare buttocks sticking out of the water.
The commotion he caused on social media prompted Botta to collaborate with photographer and creative Paul Ripke to produce a special series of Photo Day prints for charity.
Over 5,000 people purchased a copy of the print, raising over €50,000 for charity.
When asked how it felt to know that 5,000 people would own a photo of your butt, Botta admitted it was “weird”.
“I still haven’t signed any, maybe in an autograph session tomorrow [Sunday]maybe I’ll see some, Botta mentioned.
“I was seeing pictures of people taking pictures, some have it in their living room, kitchen or bedroom.
“What’s amazing is like the power of social media. Like we got $50,000 for charity in 24 hours with a picture of someone’s ass like that.
“It’s crazy. I don’t quite understand. But, you know, we’re doing well.
Botta explained that Cromwell took the photo before Ripke did the editing and helped set up the charity fundraising plan.
“The next day we decided we’d like to print something for charity, and we decided to do it,” he said. “And then it went like a boom.”
Botta doubted they would make any other products using the image, saying anyone who managed to get a print was “very lucky”.
