An old school bus is looking for a new home – Santa Cruz Sentinel

Leaf Leathers enjoys a quiet moment in the 1956 International Harvester bus he lovingly restored. The bus, which once ferried students to Aromas, is now for sale and is currently parked in its Live Oak driveway. The vehicle, officially named Grace the Enchanted Bus, belonged to Leaf after purchasing it in 1970 from Bonny Doon when it first arrived in Santa Cruz County. Leaf transformed the five-window bus into a two-story house with a back porch. Leaf is looking for a new owner who will love the bus as much as he does. He said: “She has a lot to offer, being a proven practical, effective and simple lifestyle. Live without a mortgage. Live with nature in the event of a fire, it’s ready to roll reliably. With a brand new paint job, she looks amazing. Inside, the craftsmanship is exquisite. The bus has a 1940s oiled light fir tongue and groove called Thriftite. There is redwood trim and the floors are oak. There are functional antiques throughout, including a fully equipped kitchen with an antique Wedgewood stove with oven. There is an oak folding table for four. The skylight provides excellent temperature and airflow control. The bus is well insulated. Upgrade to a queen bed loft with a full opening window or upgrade to the front living room loft. Regarding the history of the bus, Leaf added, “In the years 1974 to 1986, we traveled across British Columbia to the southern deserts in search of hot springs and beauty. Since then, the bus has been remodeled and modified three times, with the third ending just now. Grace showed us the little water, propane and electricity we needed. She was off the grid. She taught us that less is more and freed us to be present and available for life. For the past 25 years, the bus has remained in its bunk as my quiet refuge. I am now ready to move it on the road. It is my intention, given the difficult times we are going through and the acute need for housing, to offer this bus as a protected stationary home rather than a passenger vehicle. May Grace bestow upon you her many gifts of simple and enduring living in this wondrous land. To learn more about the bus, visit www.gracetheenchantedbus.com (Shmuel Thaler – Santa Cruz Sentinel)
